ASPIRE . INSPIRE . GROW

Being self-aware is one of the most crucial aspects of living. As we build our own connection with movement, we gain confidence both physically and mentally. Allowing us the opportunity to change and adapt while staying true to ourselves. Dance is merely a vessel for the expression of self-awareness. Either that being the ability to connect with rhythmic sounds or connecting through the energy of others, dance is something that is ingrained within us. The potential with dance is endless like that of the type of emotions we feel as people. No two emotions are quite the same, yet we can still relate in a way that feels in sync. As a dance mentor it is my duty to help my students tap into this potential and help them aspire towards a greater understanding of dance and physical expression.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act. But a habit.

What I do

I specialise in what is commonly known as hip hop dance styles. Setting my foundation with b-boying (breaking) and grooves. What people call hip hop today is an evolved form of dance derived from two distinct sounds of music; hip hop and funk. There are countless different backgrounds of dance from both these genres such as locking, popping, waacking or b-boying, house and what I like to call “party dances” (moves that become viral from time to time). Knowing the history of certain dance styles is crucial to understanding the culture around the movement, which then sets the identity of the style and in turn influences your own identity as a dancer.

Through this knowledge and experience I’m able to teach and lead people into a pathway where they can create their own identity through movement as we explore different styles and learn how to move to music. Music is the most important external factor to dance that I use to enhance expression. Urban choreography, depending on the aim, heavily relies on what the dancer/choreographer is trying to express while listening to a particular sound track.

Through the 8+ years of dancing, teaching and learning I’ve created a program that’s based on the mind, body and soul concept. It brings life to the creativity of a dancer. Depending on the individual’s needs I’m able to cater directly to the source where I can help foster growth. Either it being their mindset, their movement or the way they feel or hear music. For me, dance is more than something to show people, it provides a perspective on life.
